Since 1946, India has seen 17 Chief Ministers in Assam, starting from Gopinath Bordoloi being the first CM in 1946 from Indian National Congress Party, to the currently serving CM Himanta Biswa Sarma from BJP, who took oath on May 2021.The highest ruling party in Assam has been INC, followed by the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad Party. Assam has also been under Presidents rule for 4 times for a short period of time. India's first female Muslim Chief Minister in Assam, took oath in 1980.
